Remove the JOKERs from your tile set.
Shuffle the tiles face down and distribute them so each player starts with half the deck, 26 tiles each. Keep the tiles face down and arrange them into a stack of your choosing (stacking 6 rows of 4 tiles with a remainder of 2 is the most popular build).
Players simultaneously say, "I, De, Clare, War," and on "War," they place a tile from their stacks face up in the middle of the tableau. The player with the higher tile wins and takes both tiles for themselves. Aces are the highest, 2's are the lowest. Tiles won should be arranged face down in a second, separate stack. Win the game by winning all the tiles from your opponent.
Once the players have gone through 26 matches and their initial stacks of tiles are depleted, if a player hasn't won already, each player should shuffle and arrange their winnings into a stack to begin the next round of matches. It's important to shuffle so that neither player can predict when their Aces will come into play - no cheating!
In the event where players put down matching tiles, they'll raise the stakes in a "Show Down." As both players say the syllables of the chant, place 3 face down tiles on "I, De, Clare," and the final tile goes face up on "War." The highest face up tile wins all 10 tiles on the tableau. Players can decide if they want to flip over the face down tiles to see the quality of the win/loss before moving on to the next match, or if they want it to remain a mystery.
If a "Show Down" ends in another tie, do another one. The winner will then get all 18 tiles on the tableau.
If a player doesn't have enough tiles to finish all 4 syllables of the chant, their last tile will be played face up as their bid, but the other player must continue to wage 4 of their tiles for the "Show Down."
"2 Player Mahjong" gets a remix using the Playing Tile Deck. Set aside the two JOKERS and all four 7's from the tile set. Shuffle the 48 remaining tiles face down.
Each player gets 24 tiles to arrange face down into 6 columns of 4. To decide who starts the game, players choose a color - black or red. Flip over one of the 6 discarded tiles to determine the winning color. The winner chooses to be "higher" or "lower," meaning whether they are trying to fill their board with Ace - 6 or 8 - King; the other player is aiming for the unchosen set. Win by being the first to uncover and arrange all 24 tiles of your set into your 4x6 rectangle.
The winner of the color choice starts by revealing any of the tiles from the top or bottom row of their rectangle. If the flipped tile belongs to their set, they place it in the appropriate column. Arrange your set in ascending order from left to right. For example, if a player aiming for the "higher" set reveals a 9, then that tile should be fed into the second column from the left of their rectangle. The player then flips the fifth extraneous tile from that column to continue the game. Players can choose to feed into their columns from the top or bottom, but they must stick with their feeding pattern throughout the whole game. Both players should keep their sets neatly arranged in a 4x6 rectangle so that the extraneous 5th tile to be turned over is easily identified and so is each player's progress in completing their set.
If the revealed tile belongs to the opponent's set, then that tile is given to them, and it is now their turn to begin revealing extraneous tiles from their rectangle.
